Speech Therapy Month: Bridging the Gap of Summer

Updated: Jun 10
During Speech Therapy Month, Clay County Medical Center is recognizing the important role speech-language pathologists play in helping individuals develop and strengthen communication skills. This year, the Speech Therapy team is highlighting the importance of maintaining progress during the summer months when school-based services may not be available.

According to speech-language pathologist Megan Gfeller, consistent support is essential for children working on speech and language development goals. The transition between school years can be a challenging time, and without continued intervention, some students may experience setbacks.
“Speech Therapy Month is not just about celebrating our profession; it’s about recognizing the vital need for consistent support in every child’s journey toward effective communication,” said Gfeller. “Especially during summer break, when the structured environment of school-based speech therapy is unavailable, it is important to bridge the gap and maintain progress.”
Many children rely on school routines and speech services to support their communication development. During the summer months, the absence of these services can slow progress and make it more difficult for students to maintain the gains they achieved throughout the school year.
Research has shown that summer learning loss can have a greater impact on students with speech and language disorders. By providing targeted therapy and engaging activities during the summer, speech-language pathologists can help students continue building skills and reduce the risk of regression.
Clay County Medical Center’s Speech Therapy team is committed to helping children and families maintain momentum throughout the year and ensuring that progress does not stop when school is out of session.
