As the only hospital in Clay County, Clay County Medical Center (CCMC) serves as more than a healthcare provider—it is a vital part of the county’s economy, workforce, and overall quality of life.

According to a recent economic impact study, CCMC directly supports more than 258 jobs. When accounting for the broader impact throughout the region, that number grows to more than 392 jobs and over $20.7 million in labor income. Nearly one in every eight jobs in Clay County is connected to the healthcare sector, with much of that impact tied directly to CCMC.

“There is no backup plan for healthcare in Clay County,” said Austin Gillard, CEO of Clay County Medical Center. “As the county’s only hospital, CCMC carries the full responsibility of keeping this community healthy and economically strong.”

Healthcare accounts for 12.8% of all jobs and 17.4% of total labor income within Clay County. In practical terms, nearly one out of every six dollars earned in wages throughout the county is connected to CCMC and the healthcare services it provides. Those wages support local businesses, restaurants, retailers, and service providers while contributing to local tax revenues that help fund schools, roads, and community services.

Beyond its economic impact, CCMC provides essential healthcare services that would otherwise require residents to travel significant distances for care. From emergency services and imaging to maternity care, surgery, and senior services, the hospital ensures patients can receive high-quality care close to home.

“When people talk about rural hospital closures across the country, we feel the weight of that conversation every day,” Gillard said. “If CCMC didn’t exist, Clay County would be medically stranded.”

Unlike larger metropolitan areas with multiple healthcare providers and facilities, Clay County relies on a single hospital to meet the healthcare needs of its residents. CCMC’s presence helps retain families, attract new residents, support local employers, and strengthen the community’s long-term stability.

“Clay County Medical Center is more than a hospital—it’s a lifeline,” said Gillard. “Our impact touches every corner of this county, from delivering babies to delivering jobs. We’re proud to be Clay County’s hospital and proud to help shape its future.”
