Clay County Medical Center Stands Strong as OB Services Vanish Across Kansas

Updated: Jun 10
As obstetric services continue to disappear across Kansas and across the nation, Clay County Medical Center (CCMC) remains committed to providing high-quality maternity care for families throughout north-central Kansas.

According to a report from Becker’s Hospital Review, more than 30% of hospitals in Kansas’ urban counties have eliminated obstetric services, highlighting a growing challenge for expectant families seeking access to prenatal, labor, delivery, and postpartum care. Nationwide, more than 200 hospitals have closed their OB units since 2011 due to factors such as financial pressures, staffing shortages, and declining birth rates.
“In a time when even urban hospitals are losing their OB departments, we are proud to remain a trusted resource for families in our region,” said Austin Gillard, CEO of Clay County Medical Center. “Our commitment to offering quality obstetric care ensures that mothers and babies have access to the services they need.”
Clay County Medical Center continues to invest in maternity services through experienced physicians, advanced technology, and a highly skilled nursing team dedicated to supporting families throughout every stage of pregnancy and childbirth.
“Every birth is a community success story,” Gillard said. “We believe rural families deserve the same level of care and support as those in metropolitan areas.”
As maternal healthcare access continues to face challenges nationwide, Clay County Medical Center remains steadfast in its mission to provide exceptional, compassionate care close to home. By maintaining local obstetric services, CCMC helps ensure families can receive the care they need without traveling long distances during one of life’s most important moments.
