Clay County Medical Center’s OB Services Vital for Rural Communities

Kansas continues to face significant challenges in access to maternity care, with many rural hospitals no longer offering labor and delivery services. Despite these statewide trends, Clay County Medical Center (CCMC) remains committed to providing obstetric services and supporting growing families throughout the region.

According to a report from the Center for Healthcare Quality and Payment Reform (CHQPR), Kansas ranks among the states with the largest maternity care gaps, with 62% of rural hospitals no longer providing labor and delivery services. Nationally, more than half of rural hospitals have discontinued maternity care services, creating additional barriers for expectant mothers seeking care close to home.

As one of the rural hospitals in Kansas that continues to provide obstetric services, Clay County Medical Center plays an important role in ensuring families have access to prenatal care, labor and delivery services, and postpartum support without the need for extensive travel.

“Access to maternity care in rural communities is a critical issue,” said Dr. Allie Lohrmeyer. “For many families, Clay County Medical Center provides the opportunity to receive care and deliver close to home rather than traveling long distances. It is essential that we continue to advocate for and preserve these services to protect the health and well-being of our families.”

Research continues to show the importance of timely access to maternity care. Limited access can increase health risks for both mothers and babies while placing additional stress on families who must travel significant distances for care.
