Clay County Medical Center Completes First Inspire® Therapy Procedure

Clay County Medical Center has successfully completed its first Inspire® therapy procedure, expanding treatment options for patients living with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

Inspire is an FDA-approved treatment for individuals with obstructive sleep apnea who are unable to tolerate or successfully use Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy. Obstructive sleep apnea affects millions of Americans and can lead to serious health concerns when left untreated, including cardiovascular disease, stroke, memory issues, daytime fatigue, and other complications.

OSA occurs when the airway repeatedly collapses during sleep, restricting airflow and causing interruptions in breathing. These interruptions can occur dozens or even hundreds of times each night, significantly impacting sleep quality and overall health.

Unlike traditional CPAP therapy, Inspire works inside the body with a patient’s natural breathing process. The system delivers mild stimulation to the airway muscles during sleep, helping keep the airway open and allowing oxygen to flow normally. Patients use a small handheld remote to activate the device before bedtime and turn it off upon waking.

The Inspire system is implanted during a short outpatient procedure through two small incisions in the neck and chest. Most patients return home the same day and recover with minimal discomfort.

The safety and effectiveness of Inspire have been demonstrated through extensive clinical research, including the STAR clinical trial. Long-term results have shown significant reductions in sleep apnea events, improved quality of life, high patient satisfaction, and strong therapy adherence.
