Artist Statement - Fernando Ugarte, MD, FACS
I began enjoying photography while in medical school in Chicago, IL. While training to become a surgeon, I would sometimes take pictures in the operating room as part of procedure documentation. It was not long after that I began to expand my camera’s reach beyond the walls of the surgical suite.
My photography has no bounds, in that I will take pictures of anything that catches my eye. From landscapes to buildings to people, my hope is to capture an image that holds interest with its unique details. My camera goes everywhere I do. I use Nikon equipment and have several different lenses. My editing process is minimal; because I want the photograph to resemble the actual object at the time it was captured as closely as possible.
Photography has become my lifelong hobby. I take photos for The Leaven, a Catholic newspaper. I have been asked to photograph weddings and I have won photography contests in the past. But most of all, I love photography because it brings me relaxation and contentment, especially since my job as a surgeon can be quite intense. I currently reside in Marysville, KS where I work as a full time general surgeon and part time photographer. I have lived here over 20 years.
