Thressia
Evans Reed | I
dedicate the heart block in memory of my Grandmother, Thressia Evans Reed who
passed away with cancer in 1993, less than 8 weeks after being diagnosed.
If you asked me to tell you about my Grandmother, I would tell you that she was
an extremely proud woman. She held her head high and kept great faith through
the many trials and tribulations throughout her life. Her favorite saying was
"We'll get through this, what other choice do we have."
If you asked me to tell you about my Grandmother, I would tell you about the way
she always covered her mouth when she smiled, loved reading, eating roast beef
and watching TV. How she made me ice cream smoothies and extra cheesy vegetables.
How she called me "Grandma's number one angel," was so terribly frightened of
thunderstorms, loved Sunday dinners, enjoyed singing, loved her family first and
foremost, had beautiful long fingernails, was a fashionable dresser and disliked
crowds. If you
asked me to tell you about my Grandmother, I would tell you that she was an early
riser, always up between 4:30 and 5:00 A.M. every morning. I can still see her
sitting at her kitchen table drinking a cup of hot coffee and reading the morning
paper. I recall her favorite white coffee cup with a chip on the rim. Today, our
family keeps that special little coffee cup at our house, tucked away safely in
a memory box of Grandma's. If
you asked me to tell you about my Grandmother, I would tell you about her puppy
Niko. Grandma loved that black and white dog almost as much as it loved her. I
honestly believe that today Niko is sitting at the foot of Grandma's chair in
heaven. I am
so very proud of my Grandmother - a woman blessed with courage, strength, and
the will to fight in the most unfair battle one can fight - the one against cancer.
I am blessed to have not only loved her, but to have been loved by her. What a
gift she gave me. Being a nurse, I see Grandma in every patient I care for, her
character in me, and her face in my daughter. Please ask me to tell you about
my Grandmother. A greater tale, I could not be more honored to tell.
I love you Grandma - Now you're My Number One Angel
