Book Author Laurel Johnson at CCMC Lunch Bunch
August 20, 2008
Book author Laurel Johnson, retired RN, was the guest speaker at this month's Lunch Bunch Program. She talked about how she began her career in writing and what kept her committed.
Her first book, The Grass Dance, was self pulblished in December of 1991. Her second book, The Alley Of Wishes, sparked the interest of a publishing company after being nominated for the Faulkner Award. She said, " If I would of won I would be in New York right now having lunch with Stephen King."
Before her presentation, Laurel was surprised by a childhood classmate, Geraldine Beikman, who both went to school in Marysville, Kansas. The two women had not seen each other for years. It was a special time for both ladies as they got reacquainted. . Geraldine had read some of Laurel's books then gave them to her daughter Lori Beikman , Marketing Assistant, to read and to share them with employees at the hospital. Employees shared their interest in the books with Mary Jensen, who in turn ask Laurel to speak to the group. We were not disappointed as Laurel delighted the audience with stories of her experiences as a writer.
Her book, My Name is Esther Clara, was of particular interest to many in the crowd and a favorite of those who had read it.
Klyd Watkins, publisher, poet, musician and retired college English teacher from Nashville, TN said it best, "When you take an outstanding body of oral history material and put it into the hands of a skilled writer, you can't lose. With a poet's ear for monologue and a novelist's knack for storytelling, Laurel Johnson has turned her grandmother's memories into a work of art"
