Together We Can Make A Difference
By Sharon Wachsnicht and Linda Underwood

February 19, 2009

Gary & Sharon WachsnichtGary & Sharon Wachsnicht have lived in and around the Clay Center community all their lives.  For the past six months, they have been dealing with cancer.  In August 2008, Gary was told that he had colon cancer.  Following surgery in early September, he has been seeing an oncologist for follow-up treatment.

In December 2008, Sharon found out that she had an aggressive form of skin cancer called melanoma.  This diagnosis followed with the removal of a lesion from her right leg.  Due to the nature of this disease, a large incision was required, as well as a radioactive test for lymph node involvement.  On December 31, 2008 Sharon underwent this surgery in Manhattan.  It was determined that she needed a skin graft, and had to have a malignant lymph node removed.  On January 14, 2009 a second surgery was done in Manhattan for further lymph node detection.  This surgery also resulted in the removal of another malignant lymph node.

A third surgery was done in Clay Center on January 26, 2009 and on a happier note, the pathology report on this surgery showed no malignancy on this biopsy.  Sharon will be seeing an oncologist for follow-up treatment.

Gary is retired, but teaches welding classes at Hutchinson/Mayrath a couple of nights a week.  Sharon works at Clay County Medical Center, and at Ray's Apple Market, but has been off work for quite some time now.  She returned to CCMC last Monday, but can only work for 2-1/2 to 4 hours in the morning, and is quite worn out by the time she leaves.  Ray's Apple Market has let Sharon know that she will still have a position there whenever she can return, and both places have been very supportive throughout this process.  Sharon is unsure at this time when she will be able to return to her full time duties.  The couple does have health insurance with a high deductible through Sharon's employment, but with all the surgeries, other treatments, and the extended time off, the bills are overwhelming.

A fundraiser has been planned at Ray's Apple Market on February 19, 20, & 21, 2009 from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday & Friday, and from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.  We will be serving hamburgers 2 for $4.00. There will also be an on-air auction on KCLY on Friday, Feb. 20, 2009 beginning at 1:00 p.m. Auction items are in
the window at Central Plains Title, 707 5th Street until Friday noon.

We are also hoping to get $500 in matching funds from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Republican River Chapter #30307.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to help Sharon can do so by sending it to:  Sharon Wachsnicht, c/o Clay County National Bank, P. O. Box 260, Clay Center, Ks  67432-0260.

Please keep Sharon and her family in your prayers as they continue to fight this dreadful disease.  Together we can make a difference.  Thanking you in advance for your prayerful consideration of this event, and looking forward to seeing you there.
