Marketing Efforts Honored in Statewide Competition
November 13, 2009

WICHITA, Kan. – Clay County Medical Center was recognized for excellence in public relations and marketing for their Screen Saver Project and Rook Memorial Art project managed by the hospital’s marketing/public relations team.Awards
Presented by the Kansas Association of Health Care Communicators, the Emerald Awards are given annually to hospitals across the state that excel in internal communications, external communications, special events, advertising, and other categories. Judges from the Louisiana Society for Hospital Public Relations & Marketing evaluated this year’s 56 entries for planning and research, implementation, cost effectiveness, and results.
The Emerald Awards were presented at the Kansas Association of Health Care Communicators luncheon and meeting Nov. 13, held during the Kansas Hospital Association’s Annual Convention in Wichita.
“Our entire organization is proud of the excellent public relations and marketing efforts that earned this outstanding recognition,” said Ron Bender, hospital chief executive officer.

Screen Saver

Like many hospitals, Clay County Medical Center relied on a paper newsletter to communicate with employees. The newsletter had its limitations: Not enough space for all of the news and the inability to communicate timely information quickly. An idea from a corporate screensaver at a bank gave the hospital’s marketing team the idea to adopt a similar approach, because even employees without computers see screens at the time clocks. Messages rotate frequently on the hospital’s new screensaver, and will eventually also rotate on a flat screen in the hospital dining room. The new approach saved paper and provided immediate access to information. There are multiple examples of positive response from employees—from more submissions of vacation photos to an increase in the number of orders of logo’d merchandise. Judges called the idea terrific and a great way to save money—and trees! Congratulations to Marcia Newell, Lori Beikman and Clay County Medical Center.

Rook Memorial

Ellen Rook, a Clay County Medical Center board member, was passionate about art. When she passed away, she designated a memorial to the hospital, and her family asked that the money be used to purchase artwork for public areas. Entering new territory, the marketing team and hospital leaders worked to find artwork Ellen would favor from Kansas artists or those with strong ties to the area, and art that would be appropriate for the hospital setting. The effort inspired a much wider interest, generating additional artwork from those in the community and from employees. Not surprisingly, the effort has generated positive phone calls and comments from employees, and has added a touch of quality that is a new source of pride for the hospital and the community. The judges praised the research and called the project a great community tribute to a caring, compassionate board member.
